Abstract

The article is timed to the anniversary of the Institute of Latin America and is devoted to the formation and development of cultural studies in this scientific Institution since the creation in 1967 of the Sector for Culture, Science and Education (later the Center for Cultural Research). The author emphasizes that from the very beginning of the Sector's existence, its researchers have used an integrated approach to the study of Latin American culture, paying attention to all its areas: science and education, literature and visual arts, music and architecture, theater and cinematography, cultural geography and cultural ties. It briefly tells about the scientists who stood at the origins, as well as those who came later and work to this day. Particular attention is paid to the publication in 2000 of the Encyclopedia "Culture of Latin America", on which the team worked for several years and which was awarded the UNESCO Diploma "For Contribution to Dialogue among Civilizations". By listing the most important monographs and international conferences prepared by the department, the author reveals the problems and current trends in the work of the research team.
