Abstract

The article focuses on the concepts of active and contemplative life in the writings of Isidore of Seville (about 560–636). The analysis carried out in a broad comparative historical perspective demonstrates a synthesis of Greco-Roman and Christian ideas in Isidore’s views on the subject. The research enables the author to speak about the preservation of some sociopolitical features of antique civic community. Isidore’s comprehension of vita activa and vita contemplativa displayed in the article testifies to gradual transformation of the classical heritage in the Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo.
