Abstract
The article reveals the life image of I.I. Sreznevsky — a teacher, a thinker whose creative path was associated with the formation of Russian science. Fragments of the scientist's forgotten book are commented "On the study of the native language in general and especially in childhood", analyzes his contribution to the development of Russian lexicography, ethnology language, in the study of written monuments.
