Abstract
The article analyzes the ideas of Kazakhstani schoolchildren about the ranking of professions according to the criteria of public utility, prestige and profitability. The data show the dynamics of opinions about the hierarchy of professions and the prevalence of utilitarian criteria in their assessment among schoolchildren. The coincidence of students ' ideas about the prestige and profitability of professions and the contradiction between public utility and profitability are determined. There is a dangerous trend from the point of view of social well-being of society: socially useful professions are the least profitable and often not prestigious. Professions related to understanding the processes taking place in society (scientist) are being pushed to the periphery of public consciousness and become unpopular. Working professions appear at the last stages according to all three criteria. The hierarchy of prestige of professions correlates with the real educational and professional strategies of Kazakhstan's youth.
