Abstract
This paper is devoted to V. D. Yermolin’s place in the cultural history of Ancient Rus. Based on the analysis of the studies conducted by the Russian authors, it is concluded that the prevalent vision of Yermolin as an architect and a sculptor needs to be revised. An assumption is made that he was but the manager of construction works. The paper also reviews the problem of social standing of master builders in Ancient Rus in general and in the Grand Duchy of Muscovy in particular.
