Abstract
This analysis of publications and patents reconsiders the contributions of the famous German inventor Gottlieb Daimler. Some widespread perceptions regarding his role cannot find justification, in particular the myths that often circulate in the German mass media that credit him with the invention of the automobile and of the liquid fuel internal combustion engine, based on his two “great inventions” (German patents 28022 and 28243). In fact, Daimler used in these patents the earlier ideas of the four- stroke engine patented by Nikolaus August Otto and the ignition tube patented by Leo Funck. Daimler’s own original contribution of thermal isolation for the combustion chamber, proposed in these patents, did not prove particularly useful. His real priority lies in the first experiments on using the internal combustion engine in various transportation devices.
