Abstract
The fi rst research institution in the Northern Urals - the Pechora Natural History Station - operated in 1906-1914 out of the village Ust-Tsilma, Arkhangelsk region (now the Komi Republic). The station was organized by A. V. Zhuravskii in consultation with and with the help from the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Zhuravskii launched annual expeditions to the tundra and collected rich collections of geological, entomological, and ethnographic samples, which he deposited in academic museums. The activity of the station marked the beginning of the systematic study of North-Eastern Russia.
