Abstract
A fragment of a black-figured lekane lid was found during the excavations in the North- Western part of Tauric Chersonesos in 1977-1984. This rare find became the starting point in a process of moving the date of the Doric polis foundation from the end of the 5th century BC up to the last quarter of the 6 th century BC. It is well known that black-figure vase painting coexisted with red-figure one up to the middle of the 5th century BC. New pottery shapes developped in that period changing the style and techniques of black-figure painting. The shape of the Chersonesos lekane and the peculiarities of its painting are typical of the 5th century BC. The archaeological context of this find is also dated whithin the period from the second part of the 5th century to the 4th century BC. Thus, there are no conclusive and undeniable proofs that Tauric Chersonesos could have been founded in the last quarter of the 6th century BC.
