Abstract

In 1989 a collection of ancient coins from Chersonesus Taurica, which formerly belonged to N.N. Grandemaison (Sevastopol, Crimea) was added to the numismatic collection of the State Historical Museum. The collection includes rare silver coins, among them a drachma and its fractions with the head of Parthenos turned left, a club, a fish and the abbreviated name of the city XEP (№ 1, 2). According to A.N. Zograf, the coins must be dated to 390-370 BC. The rare copper coins of the same type (№ 4–6) belong to the same period. The collection also includes copper coins extremely poorly represented in museum collections, such as the following types: dolphin– club (№ 8), kantharos–club (№ 9), biga – lion with a spear (No 35, ca. 340s BC), Athena–Nike with the magistrates’ names (dated to the 250–200 BC), Apollo–tripod, etc. Especially interesting are the copper coins with dates, which make it possible to revise the problem of relations between Chersonesus, Bosporus and Rome.
