Abstract
The article is devoted to the history of Chersonesus Taurica in the 4th century AD. The author presents a comparative analysis of the only three narrative sources concerning this period, i.e. The History of the Fortress of Cherson, the 53th chapter of De administrando Imperio by Constantine Porphyrogenitus and The Lives of the Bishops of Cherson. Analysing their composition, sources and ideology, the author supposes that they were written simultaneously in the fi rst half of the 6th century during the consolidation and growth of Byzantine possessions in the North Pontic area, where the Bosporos began to play the preeminent role. Both the History and the Lives could have been attempts to defend Chersonesus’ independence from the Bosporos.
