- Abstract
- The final period in the history of Olbia Pontica is the last quarter of the 3rd – 4th century AD. After the Gothic invasion in 269–270 life in the city did not resume until the mid 280s. It is important to specify the character of this period, not only in order to understand the reasons why active life stopped in Olbia, but also to point out the characteristic features of the development of the South Bug area in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. It has to be stated that Olbia ceased to be the centre of a large agricultural area. Its chora is within 5 to 10 km radius from the city, the rest of the surrounding territory being occupied by settlements of the Chernyakhov culture. However, as the research in the area shows, traditional agriculture remained the basis of Olbia’s economy. Architecture and building techniques as well as the rest of material culture continued the ancient traditions. This period of the life of the city is therefore to be characterized as late antiquity not post-antiquity. The character of interaction between the barbarian and late antiquity cultures is to be studied in more detail.
