Abstract
The article examines the census categories that were employed in order to represent the ethnic and racial diversity of Belize, as well as the social and historical context in which the censuses were held, and their political and social impact. How was the notion of “diversity” (national, religious, “racial”, ethnic, etc.) changing over time? How was the population diversity taken, or not taken, into account in designing social control mechanisms? What political, social, or ideological motivations underlay the decision-making? Who was responsible for designing the tools and categories of description for censuses? What goals did they pursue? How were those tools and goals changing within the altering political and institutional frameworks (colony, self-regulated territory, independent state)?
