Abstract
The paper investigates the phenomenon of “shelters” - predominantly Afrikaans informal settlements concentrated in the northern part of the Gauteng Province. Based on the methods of participant observation and interviews with the owners and inhabitants of these settlements, the paper attempts to conceptualize the status of these areas and place them into the broader context of South African urban informality.
